Cloudflare, a leading content delivery network (CDN) provider, released 2024 its annual global network traffic trend report, showing a 17.2% increase in overall traffic compared to the previous year. Google remains the highest traffic generator globally, while the United States remains the primary source region for bot traffic.
Cloudflare analyzed data covering approximately 19% of global internet traffic through its international network security service infrastructure and observed several significant trends.
The report indicates that Google continues to dominate as the most popular internet service, while OpenAI leads in generative AI services. WhatsApp and Facebook lead in instant messaging and social media categories, respectively. Starlink satellite network traffic increased 3.3 times year-over-year due to rising global adoption, with African countries like Malawi seeing an even more dramatic increase of approximately 38 times.
Network traffic growth remained steady in the first half of 2024 but began increasing from mid-August and continued rising through November, with growth rates similar to the previous two years.
The United States remains the primary source of bot traffic: Cloudflare’s report shows that the US accounts for 34.6% of global bot traffic, far ahead of second-placed Germany (6.8%), followed by Iran, China, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
The US’s dominance in bot traffic is primarily attributed to hosting major cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Amazon Web Services contributed approximately 12.7% of global bot traffic, while Google accounted for 7.8%. Google’s web crawler, Googlebot, remains the highest source of crawl traffic in Cloudflare’s indexing operations.
In recent AI technology development trends, the number of AI bots used for web scraping for training data has increased significantly. ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) showed peak bot activity in early 2024, while Anthropic’s bot traffic also experienced several traffic peaks.
Google Chrome browser dominated 2024 with 65.8% of browsing requests, far ahead of other browsers. Apple’s Safari browser maintained its lead in second place with a 15.5% market share, particularly on iOS devices. Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox held 6.9% and 4% respectively.
In search engines, Google maintains its lead with over 88% market share, while Yandex reaches 3.1%, Baidu 2.7%, Microsoft’s Bing 2.6%, and privacy-focused DuckDuckGo 0.9%.
Mobile device traffic accounts for approximately 41.3% of total traffic, similar to last year. iOS devices generate approximately one-third of mobile traffic, with Android devices accounting for most. In higher-income regions like the US, Canada, Norway, and Sweden, iOS devices generate more network traffic, while Android devices dominate in Africa, Asia, and South America.
In 2024, 225 major network disruptions globally were caused mainly by government-led internet blockades, cable damage, and power outages. For example, in July, Bangladesh experienced nearly nationwide internet disruption due to student protests. Additionally, global IPv6 adoption reached 28.5%, with India and Malaysia leading at 68.9% and 59.6% respectively.
Cloudflare’s email security data shows approximately 4.3% of emails were identified as malicious, with common threats including phishing links and identity spoofing. Some top-level domains (like .bar and .rest) had over 99% of their emails classified as spam or malicious.
Furthermore, Cloudflare data shows Spain has the fastest internet globally, with download speeds of 292.6 Mbps and upload speeds of 192.6 Mbps. The top ten countries all averaged download speeds above 200 Mbps.
Notably, 13% of traffic using Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 protocol employed post-quantum encryption technology, indicating that organizations are actively preparing for potential security challenges posed by quantum computing advances.
